Inclusion Policy and Statement of Committment

Background

The term inclusion refers to what we do to ensure our diverse community is reflected and respectful in sport participants. Being inclusive means being proactive in the way we plan, lead and control the delivery of sport and recreation opportunities for everyone.

Inclusion in sport means everyone in our diverse community, regardless of their gender, age, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, sex characteristic or ability, is afforded a range of opportunities to participate.

A person is not defined by a single characteristic such as their age, religious affiliation or sexual orientation. Yet some communities are under-represented in sport participation.

The demographic communities in which sport operates in Australia has changed dramatically over the last decade

Our commitment

Pickleball Tasmania provides choice and opportunities to support greater participation by:

  • People with disability
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) communities
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tasmanians
  • People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds
  • Women and Girls
  • Older adults

In addition, people who are experiencing social or economic disadvantage are less likely to participate in organised sport or be physically active.

In understanding the need for inclusion in sport it is important to remember that individuals may identify with some, or all, of these characteristics.

We commit to informing, supporting and empowering our members and all others involved in Pickleball in relation to inclusion and diversity issues.

To reflect the community that we are part of:

  • We will have a good understanding of who is in our community and the obstacles they may face to participating in our activity/sport.
  • We will regularly engage with groups in our community, including schools, community centres, cultural groups and religious groups. This helps us understand the needs of our community and how we can improve Pickleball for everybody.
  • We commit to ensuring our sport activities consider the individual needs of participants and are appropriate to the level of development and skill. Where necessary we will make adaptations and modifications to cater for individual needs.

To address inclusion and diversity, Pickleball Tasmania commits to the following 7 Pillars of Inclusion:

  • Access
  • Attitude
  • Choice
  • Partnerships
  • Communication
  • Policy
  • Opportunities

In making this commitment we recognise that Pickleball Tasmania has an important role to play in leading our community towards ensuring everyone has the chance to participate in Pickleball at the level and in the roles they choose.

Pickleball is a valuable part of our community and we will commit to shaping the culture of the sport by ensuring that Pickleball Tasmania and our member clubs are welcoming, safe and accessible for all.

Note upon adoption of this document Pickleball Tasmania and its board of management will conduct a review annually (at minimum) or as required.
